Some common certification systems in the U.S. are:
Gemological Institute of America (GIA) GIA is based in the US and is considered the standard grading system for diamonds. They are the authority on diamonds colored stones and pearls. The company has education programs to certify students in the 4 C's (color, cut, clarity, carat) of diamond grading. They are dedicated to gemological research, the stone treatment process as well as setting a global standard for quality stone standards to protect the buying public.
What is a GIA Graduate? Our GIA Graduate has comprehensive knowledge of diamonds and colored stones as well as expertise in evaluating gems by the 4C's (color, cut, clarity, carat weight), the International Diamond Grading System, and the Colored Stone Grading System.
American Gemological Society (AGS) Much like GIA, AGS is focused on creating a standard grading system to protect consumers in the buying market. Approx. 3,4000 jewelers, suppliers, and individual title holders are part of the organization and have dedicated themselves to the high standard of gemological education, maintaining the training and skill to be part of this membership organization. AGS, is very well known for its in-depth knowledge and research in the diamond color grades.
European Gemological Laboratory USA (EGL USA) EGL USA, another organization dedicated to the gemological research and protection of the industry and it's consumers providing research, testing and analysis of diamonds, gemstones, and jewelry exclusively in North America.
What is the difference between EGL USA and EGL? Originally, EGL USA was a franchise operating under the EGL International brand; in 1986, it became its own independent organization. The main differences in the organization is their grading standards. EGL international has multiple laboratories so grading tends to be a little more lenient. It is standard that EGL international grades about one color grade and one clarity grade lower then EGL USA.
International Gemological Institute (IGI) The largest independent gem certification and institute for diamonds, colored gemstones, and jewelry with locations all around the globe. IGI provides certifications for diamonds and gemstone jewelry, as well as the IGI school of Gemology where jewelers can be certified and training on stone identification professional jewelry designs.
